Plant of the Week:  Fargesia Mountain Bamboo 'Rufa'

Join the rest of the world in celebrating the 2008 Olympics in Beijing by plantingbamboo a different variety of ornamental grass – Bamboo. Bamboo grows in a diverse climate, from cold mountain regions to the hot tropics. It flowers, it’s colorful and there is even has a variegated variety.  Begick Nursery carries a newly discovered Mountain Bamboo – Fargesia ‘Rufa’, a clumping bamboo with a NON-INVASIVE root system. That will make a lot of gardeners happy. ‘Rufa’ is a vigorous grower, although it is one of the shorter varieties, growing 7-10’ tall with ½" diameter culms (stems). These culms shoot up and leaf out in early summer making them very useful when or where ever full foliage is needed quickly.  Culms have an attractive reddish sheath for interesting color in the landscape or garden. And want to talk about character, check out the interesting design on the young shoots. Fargesia is by far the hardest of the bamboo’s growing in zones 5 to 9. Leaves do not curl in the sun like other bamboo’s but prefers protection from direct, hot afternoon sun, making it very useful in a shady area. Fargesia varieties are happy growing in moderately acidic, loamy soil and bamboo shootneed to have the soil directly above their roots mulched to keep the soil soft and moist. Mulch over the entire root ball is best for winter protection. Low maintenance and almost pest free - moles can eat underground roots and less devastating pests are mites and aphids, which can be control with live ladybugs or insecticidal soap. Begick Nursery has ‘Rufa’ by Proven Winnersbamboo culm in a #3 gal container for $74.99.
